towards us, we expect to see the rain by 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon getting heavier as the day wears on. w we expect earl parallel to the outer banks. just about 2:00, 3:00 tomorrow morning and as it continues up the coast to the jersey shoreline and then new england, we expect it might possibly make landfall along to nantucket where it juts out. it doesn't have to make landfall to cause major problems. it is moving forward at 18 miles per hour. that will increase the possibility of storm surge where you get most of the damage through the storm surge, but we look for heavy rains, high winds and, again, hurricane force winds extend out 90 miles from the center of the storm. so you don't have to make landfall to get major impact from this hurricane. we'll continue to monitor it and there will be an update coming up from the national hurricane center within the hour. more details for you. >> thanks very much, al. let's get over to meteorologist bill karins. i can tell you fraught talking to al earlier, those winds have picked up where he is. what are things looking like right now? >> i am

, savannah. this was the worst helicopter crash in about four years for u.s. troops. nine troops dead. this happened in zabul province, which is in the south-southeastern section of afghanistan. an area where the taliban controls much of the territory and where coalition forces have been stepping up their attempts to push the taliban out. we are told this crash happened about 4:00 this morning, local time. the military says that there were no reports of enemy fire. that the crash is still under investigation. now, despite the fact that there were no reports of enemy fire, the taliban has called news organizations, including a call here at nbc news in kabul, to claim responsibility for the attack. they say they shot the helicopter down. the taliban often does that, claims responsibility for things that turn out to be accidents. and indeed, most of the helicopter crashes here have turned out to be accidents. maintenance problems, the incredible amount of dust in the air. this is the deadliest year for coalition forces. after today's crash, 525 coalition forces have died this year. 351 o

. but they do extend, big waves for many miles. the eye of the storm is disappearing on us. we could be undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle and that may not have time to fully wind back up. now the waves are probably the biggest story with this storm. the beach erosion is going to be incredible. we have 14-foot waves off of hatteras, 13-foot waves off of wilmington. the wave action is going to be incredible going all the way up the east coast to cape cod during the day tomorrow. hurricane warnings cape cod, hurricane warnings from virginia beach southward to just outside of jacksonville, north carolina near camp lejeune. as far as our commuter models go, everything is taking it offshore at this point. the only close call is out there at nantucket, martha's vineyard, chatam. it should be a category 3 and then a category 2 by the time it's south of new england, weakening to a category 1 as it impacts either down east maine, they're probably going to get hit good saturday morning. the tropical storm force winds, the worst where stephanie is located, and then as everyone drives to wo

reports are that the first suspect was using an automatic weapon. >> yeah, that initial report, thomas, now, again, we don't have that from law enforcement. so t could be anywhere from what you and i know to be a semiautomatic pistol all the way up to something like an automatic rifle, for example, an ak-47. we just don't know right now. what we do know is that this first individual, evidentally was making some kind of statement first by firing these rounds and, unfortunately, we said he fired them in the area, didn't shoot at anyone in particular but he turned the weapon on himself and killed himself. this second person he was allegedly seen with was that a friend or just another student or could that be another gunman? well, on that campus they just can't take the chance. right now you have this major search going on and you've got 50,000 students plus faculty and staff either hunkered down, locking themselves in place or being told to stay away from campus until this is resolved. >> clint, we'll ask you to stick with us throughout the hour as we get more information on this breaking

england. the outer banks, they see a ton of storms. huge storms all the time. the trees and buildings used to it. eastern new england, the leaves are still on the trees and may do more damage out there on the cape. waiting for tonight to see how that plays out. radar, of the storm, ron in the last rain band from the storm and probably in sunshine in an hour or two. winds in delaware and maryland, no big deal. wildwood to atlantic city, gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. so really the mid-atlantic not an issue. as the storm heads northwards, notice cape cod far to the east there. that's why it's going to see the stronger winds. rain showers moving up into new england and long island. you have to be out there on the end of long island to be hit by the storm. as far as the stormwise, a different view. hurricane warnings for cape cod. large waves are now arriving and that forecast path brings the storm closest to eastern new england right around 10:00 p.m. tonight for the reporters blowing in the breeze out there. i think we have escaped this one. it is underachieved. >> all right. bill karins,

power. let's head to new jersey where mike tiabbi is standing by for us. what's the latest out there? >> reporter: the latest is that it looks like a nice kind of oily weather, but late afternoon. near miss, glancing blow, dodging a bullet, any of them work for the jersey shore, because while they were prepared for the worst, and a category 4 hurricane would have been the worst, it certainly wasn't the worse. it didn't even deliver the tropical storm winds you were talking about, it was about 40 miles an hour. it's just about high tide right now, as you look behind me, you can see the surge of the surf coming up on the beach further than it normally does, you see people walking out there, but there's really even been very little rain here, very little flooding obviously with very little rain and no worries at this point that the rain would cause any damage whatsoever. and some people have been ignoring those warnings about rip currents, the coast guard has just suspended the search for one man who disappeared off delmar just a little while ago and they recover the body of a man who d

no ray is can city for this weekend an the manager told us no cancellations that is the same sort of thing we have heard from cape may to ocean and mon mouth counties. the economic impact not likely to happen. today, as julie suggested, there is going to be a period of to uncertainty and discomfort in the mid-atlantic states. those winds that are going to be tropical storm-force, 40 miles an hour or so, will likely hit here, the wing span of the storm is wide enough 150 miles, feel the winds here. no hurricane-force winds, even though they have been an emergency disaster declaration meaning they can close roads and open emergency shelters, not likely to be called in, no major flooding suggested, not even all that much rain, the rain did just start about ten minutes ago just in time for this report. so going to get some effects from the storm but looks like new jersey's streak, not having a landfalling hurricane for 111 years will continue along the real jersey shore. kris? >> you talk about the 40-mile-an-hour winds, the obvious question is that strong enough to blow snooki over?

downgraded to a category 1 storm. nbc's michelle franzen joins us now live from chatham, massachusetts. what is the scene like there? >> certainly, the preparation the last two days, preparing for the worst what could have been a direct hit, shaping up to be a direct hit from hurricane earl here on cape cod that is not shaping up to be the case at this hour. however, still a significant storm, as bill just mentioned a got category 1 significant winds and nantucketed expected to still take the brunt of hurricane earl. right now though, very calm, in the bay, a protected area of chatham here. there are still some people out on the beach here, taking stock of this calm weather before the storm rolls n we have had had a shower just a short time ago of the outer bands of this storm but certainly a lot of people were preparing, boarding up their houses, moving boats to safer areas and also just stocking up. >> just got some water and mostly dry goods just in case refridge rater is down. >>> it is chaos, utter, utter kay, i don't we were just in there standing in line for literally 20 minutes. peop

for bringing us up to date there. swimmers ordered out of the water because of a dangerous riptide on this very important labor day weekend. many delayed plans or just took off early. cape may, new jersey, declared a state of emergency and the communications director for cape may, when's the big concern? why the state of emergency? >> contessa, the state of emergency has just been lifted. >> okay. >> it was not a state of emergency. it was an emergency proclamation signed late yesterday afternoon that enabled the local municipalities and the county to take the extra preparedness steps that needed to be taken. looking at the path of earl yesterday. but the emergency proclamation has been lifted. here at the jersey shore, the concern is for the rough surf and rip currents. again, with the waves out at eight to 12 feet, that's what the concern is right now. there's very little rain. we are experiencing some winds, sustained winds at 30 to 40 miles per hour, gusts to 50 miles per hour. basically earl spared us here at the jersey shore. >> have there been problems with swimmers needing to be rescued
